OTD Chelsea beat Invincibles in Champions League

On 6 April 2004, Chelsea beat Arsenal 2-1 in the Champions League quarter-final.

After finishing top of Group B and progressing to the knock-out stages of the Champions League, Arsenal beat Celta Viga 5-2 on aggregate and were then drawn against Chelsea.

The first leg at Stamford Bridge ended 1-1 with goals from Eiður Guðjohnsen and Robert Pires. The ball was in Arsenal’s court upon their return to Highbury since they had their golden away goal.

However, despite Reyes putting Arsenal 1-0 ahead in the first half, Chelsea came back 2-1 in the second with a gift of a goal from Jens Lehmann for Frank Lampard and another from Wayne Bridge.

Fortunately, it wasn’t all doom and gloom for the Gunners that season since they would later win the Premier League unbeaten just 39 days later.

They also reached the League and FA Cup semi-finals.
