OTD Arsenal beat Liverpool in League Cup final

On 5 April 1987, Arsenal beat Liverpool 2-1 in the League Cup final in order to lift the trophy for the first time.

That season, Arsenal beat Huddersfield Town, Manchester City, Charlton, Nottingham Forest, Spurs and finally Liverpool to win the League Cup for the first time.

Managed by George Graham at the time, it was Charlie Nicholas who was the hero on the day, scoring a brace despite Ian Rush’s goal early on at Wembley in front of a crowd of 96,000.

Arsenal have only won the League Cup once since in 1993. Although they reached the final in 2011, Birmingham beat them 2-1 with a goal in the 89th minute.

Elsewhere, during the 1986/7 season, Arsenal reached the FA Cup quarter-finals and finished fourth in the First Division.
