OTD Alex Song scores first Premier League goal

On 11 April 2009, Alex Song scored his first Premier League goal for Arsenal.

While at Bastia, Song spent a loan spell with Arsenal in which he made five league appearances. The Gunners then decided to buy the midfielder in 2006.

During his six years as an Arsenal player, the Cameroon international made 138 appearances and scored seven league goals, despite spending half a season on loan at Charlton in 2007.

His breakthrough season at Arsenal would come during the 2008/09 campaign.

Although Song, then just 21, had already scored against Fenerbahçe in the Champions League; he didn’t score in the Premier League until April during Arsenal’s 4-1 win over Wigan.

It was the Gunners’ fifth win in a row.

Despite going 1-0 down early on thanks to Wigan’s Mido, Mikaël Silvestre, Theo Walcott and Andrey Arshavin scored Arsenal’s other goals, all of which occurred in the last half an hour.

Song signed for Barcelona in 2012 but struggled for game time and was loaned out to West Ham for two seasons.

He now plays for Rubin Kazan.
