Arsene Wenger has confirmed that David Ospina suffered a muscular injury during Arsenal’s 2-2 draw against Manchester City, which is why the Colombian missed the Gunner’s match against West Ham on Wednesday night.

  • Ospina appeared uncomfortable after a fall against City
  • Wenger previously said Petr Cech could return for Crystal Palace
  • Matt Macey, 22, is yet to play for Arsenal’s first team
  • Arsenal face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on 10 April at 8pm

Youth goalkeeper, Emi Martinez, stepped between the sticks against the Hammers midweek and was brilliant, pulling off two saves late on to keep a clean sheet.

Following the 3-0 win, Wenger spoke to the press and confirmed that Ospina has indeed suffered an injury.

“Ospina is out with a muscle injury he got against Manchester City,” Wenger said.

“Petr Cech is not back so Martinez starts in goal tonight. Of course [I have confidence in him]. Every time he has come in he has done well so lets hope that continues. I’m confident.”

Ospina joins first choice goalkeeper Petr Cech on the sidelines after the former Chelsea shot-stopped suffered a calf strain against West Brom. At the time, he was ruled out for a month. However, reserve keeper Matt Macey has since been recalled from his loan spell at Luton Town, indicating that Arsenal are in need of the extra pair of hands and suggesting that perhaps the 34-year-old is out for longer.

Perhaps Cech’s recovery isn’t going as smoothly as planned or Ospina’s muscular injury is more serious than it first appeared?
