Like most of the footballing world, Arsene Wenger admitted that he’s ‘surprised and disappointed’ by the sacking of Claudio Ranieri from Leicester City.

The Italian manager helped the Foxes do something the club never dreamed about – winning the Premier League – and now he’s been repaid by being sacked.

Speaking ahead of Arsenal’s trip to Liverpool, Wenger congratulated Ranieri on everything he’d done while at Leicester.

“I was like everybody else in football – surprised and disappointed,” he said.

“I take this opportunity to wish him well and congratulate him on what he has achieved with Leicester.”

He added, “What will be remembered is what they achieved last year. What will happen to Leicester in the future? I don’t know. That’s in the players’ hands and they responded well against Liverpool. Overall, it’s very difficult to predict what will happen. They are in a fight to stay in the Premier League but I think they have enough quality to stay in the league.”

Leicester did indeed bounce back against Liverpool with a 3-1 win. However, this is something teams often do when an old manager leaves or new one comes in. Almost like a placebo affect. They want to impress the new guy and prove that the club were right to sack the previous one.

The real proof will come in May when we see whether they managed to stay in the Premier League or not, the season after winning the title.

Hopefully, Ranieri finds a club soon.
