While there’s no doubt that Alex Iwobi has a tonne of potential, Arsenal’s 3-1 loss away to Liverpool highlighted once again that the 20-year-old still has a lot to prove when it comes to big games.

So far this season, Iwobi has featured 22 times in the Premier League. However, he’s yet to really put in convincing performances against the bigger teams and the Gunners’ trip to Liverpool is the latest example of this.

The forward was by no means the only player at fault for Liverpool’s second goal, in which every Arsenal player appeared to back off Sadio Mane, despite him being one of the Merseyside team’s biggest threats. However, he was at fault. The forward didn’t track back quick enough and once he realised he hadn’t, he didn’t do a whole lot to rectify the problem.

Arsenal fans want to see the players busting a gut to get that ball off the opposition, not gently sauntering up the pitch as they double their lead.

The forward had no shots. However, he completed 34/35 passes overall and managed to second-most in the final third – 16/16 – out of any other player. This means he only misplaced one pass for the entire match. Plus, he created a chance.

Elsewhere, Iwobi won 3/3 tackles, two of which came in the second half when the entire team raised their level.

Overall, not a terrible performance from the youngster, especially considering hardly any of Arsenal’s player were particularly dazzling on the day. But he still has a long way to go – and plenty of time – to prove himself at the top level.

Dropping him to the bench wouldn’t be a bad idea since the lad hasn’t exactly been on fantastic form for a while and a rest and regroup might do him good.

Iwobi’s talented but his inexperience is showing.
