Robert Pires believes that Arsene Wenger will renew his Arsenal contract for at least one more season.

  • Robert Pires still close to Arsene Wenger
  • Has said all along Wenger would stay at the club
  • Quite fancies the role of Director of Football at Arsenal

Robert Pires is still incredibly close with Arsene Wenger, so while many ex-players have opinions about what they think the manager will do, some carry more weight than others.

Pires still trains at the club regularly and has one eye on the upcoming new Sporting Director/Director of Football role. Although Wenger hasn’t told anyone what his plans are, if anyone is likely to have a good idea of what they could be, Le Bob is one of them.

“In my opinion, he will renew his contract, at least for one season. He is motivated and willing,” Pires told Cadena Ser.

A two-year deal has been on the table for a while but a new one year rolling contract was rumoured to be a compromise option.

“Arsene has an offer on the table. He has to sign it. He has the backing of the president.

“The fans want to win the title and Arsenal are not doing that well. They are in the [FA] Cup semifinals.

“He has to continue and if he does, he needs to change many things.

“That is the most important thing for him and for Arsenal. We will see what happens.”

Santi

Pires was also speaking to Sky Sports about Santi Cazorla, saying, “When you see the names on the paper they are great players like Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez,” he told Sky Sports News.

“The most important [thing] is missing Santi Cazorla.

“He is one of the best players at Arsenal. He’s been injured for four months now and this is a real problem for Arsenal.”
