OTD Monaco knock Arsenal out of Champions League

On 17 March 2015, Monaco knocked Arsenal out of the Champions League on away goals.

The Ligue 1 team previously won 3-1 at the Emirates with goals from Geoffrey Kondogbia, former Spurs striker Dimitar Berbatov, and Yannick Ferreira Carrasco. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also scored in added time but it wasn’t enough after Ferreira Carrasco’s minutes later. It looked as if Arsenal’s fate was sealed.

When the Gunners visited Stade Louis II in March, they staged a plucky comeback the likes of which Arsenal fans have grown accustomed.

Goals from Olivier Giroud and Aaron Ramsey meant that Arsenal won 2-0. However, the away goal rule meant that Monaco went through. The Gunners exited with their heads held high.

Despite Arsenal being favourites to go through in 2015, Monaco have proven to be tough competition in Europe since. That season, they were knocked out of the quarter-finals by Juventus by just one goal and although they didn’t make it past the group stages the following year, this season they’ve knocked out Manchester City on away goals.
