On 21 March 2009, Arsenal beat Newcastle 3-1 with Manuel Almunia saving a penalty.

Arsenal’s first choice goalkeeper at the time prevented Obafemi Martins from scoring his spot-kick in the 23rd minute, stopping the home team from going 1-0 ahead early.

Arsenal then scored through Nicklas Bendter in the second half before Martins equalised.

However, Abou Diaby and Samir Nasri scored two goals with three minutes, bringing the scoreline to 3-1 and allowing Arsenal to leave with all three points.

During his entire career, Almunia, who’s now retired, saved a total of 10 penalties. Two came that season alone and six occurred while he played for Arsenal. He failed to save a total of 28.

The win against Newcastle was part of Arsenal’s huge 21-game unbeaten run, which eventually came to an end in May when Chelsea beat the Gunners 4-1 at the Emirates. The same team Arsenal had coincidentally started the unbeaten run against back in November with a 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge.
