OTD Arsenal beat Manchester United en route to Wembley

On March 9 2015, Arsenal managed to beat Manchester United 2-1 in the sixth round of the FA Cup at Old Trafford.

Until this point, Arsenal had enjoyed a pretty straightforward run. They’d beaten the previous season’s finalists, Hull, 2-0, Brighton away 3-2 and Middlesbrough 2-0. After winning the FA Cup for the first time in nine years in May, we were hungry for another.

However, when United were drawn, at Old Trafford no less, Arsenal fans collectively groaned. In the Premier League, the Gunners have a terrible record on United’s turf, picking up on average just 0.63 points per game.

Could we possibly jump this mental hurdle in order to retain our trophy?

Arsenal’s first goal came from an unlikely source, Nacho Monreal. The left-back has only scored twice during his entire career in north London and once was away to United.

The second goal of the game was from a far more likely boot. Wayne Rooney put the Red Devils back on level terms within minutes.

The scoreline stayed at 1-1 until the 61st minute when none other than former Manchester United star, Danny Welbeck, scored Arsenal’s winner and celebrated like a madman.

Arsenal went on to beat Reading 2-1 in the semi-finals and Aston Villa 4-0 to clinch the trophy for the second season running.
