On Friday morning it was no sooner reported that Mesut Ozil was fit after his recent injury than it was reported that he was now out with a back problem.

The German FA posted a statement on their website saying that Ozil had sat out their final training session with a back problem. It didn’t seem like a serious issue but it did cause a bit of confusion, at least in my head.

Thankfully, Ozil had already made a statement on his availability, obviously issued before he did his back when he returned to training.

“It looks good for Sunday. I tweaked my thigh and calf. On Thursday I was able to train again with a few other players. I have no complaints.”

It’s still not clear if he will be fit for Germany’s game against Azerbaijan on Sunday. The Germans sit in top spot in Group C, five points ahead of Sunday’s opponents who are in third place on goal difference behind Northern Ireland.

So, it seems indeed that he was fit to play before he wasn’t.
