Eight players were in action across European competition during Friday and Saturday’s round of fixtures, with mixed success.

ENGLAND

Jack Wilshere was an unused substitute during Bournemouth’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United.

Calum Chambers (stress fracture) was not involved as Middlesbrough were defeated 2-0 away against Stoke City.

Goalkeeper Matt Macey kept a clean sheet during Luton’s 4-0 away win over Yeovil Town. His second since completing the loan move on deadline day, he has impressed with regular senior minutes recently.

Chuba Akpom wasn’t included in the matchday squad during Brighton’s 3-0 loss to Nottingham Forest. Questions have been asked about his place within Chris Hughton’s side and his lack of minutes is worrying. He has played just 89 Championship minutes out of  possible 720.

Marc Bola started as Notts County lost 3-0 away against Stevenage. The team started slowly and were made to pay for passive defending out of possession, with the fullback being replaced after 66 minutes. Creative midfielder Kaylen Hinds came on for the final five minutes as the hosts comfortably cruised to victory.

Krystian Bielik was an unused substitute during Birmingham’s 3-1 defeat against Leeds United in Friday’s evening kick-off.

FRANCE

Ismael Bennacer started and completed the full 90 minutes in a holding midfield position as Tours drew 2-2 at GFC Ajaccio. They are yet to lose when the teenager starts in his preferred position, but remain bottom of Ligue 2.

ITALY

Wojciech Szczesny was on the losing side as Roma were defeated 2-1 by fierce rivals, Napoli, on Saturday afternoon. Dries Mertens netted a well-taken brace to seal all three points – a deft chip before a simple finish at the back post.

Szczesny will be understandably disappointed but wasn’t afforded sufficient protection from his backline throughout. They were often passive when defending and Napoli’s quick forward line ensured they were consequently exposed. He couldn’t do much to stop either finish.

SCOTLAND

Jon Toral netted his first goal for Rangers during their 6-0 thrashing of Hamilton Academical in the Scottish Cup quarter-finals. A deflected effort inside the area, the Spaniard will be hoping to maintain his progress as he builds up his match fitness.

NETHERLANDS

Kelechi Nwakali played on the wing from start-to-finish during MVV Maastricht’s 2-2 draw with Almere City. Centre-back Stefan O’Connor, once again, was not involved.

Daniel Crowley started and completed the 90 minutes as Go Ahead Eagles were held to a 2-2 draw against SC Heerenveen. The teenager was given a 7 rating by WhoScored and his match statistics justify this:
