Since the disheartening (to put it lightly) 3-1 loss to West Brom, reports that Arsene Wenger has decided to stay at Arsenal and ‘shake-up’ the club over the summer have increased – but how?

Here are five ways Wenger could and should change Arsenal over the summer.

Backroom staff

L’Equipe reported at the weekend that if Wenger does stay, he’s going to change the backroom staff.

Indeed, it would be naive to assume that all coaching decisions lie 100% on Wenger’s shoulders. The Frenchman has numerous staff members working for him behind the scenes and by his side.

Changing the staff should, in theory, change the way the players train, our approach to games. Everything. Obviously, as long as Wenger says so.

This is the only issue. If Wenger recognises that something behind the scenes needs to change, why has he not been making efforts to do so already? Or has he?

Out with the old

Selling or releasing players who are no longer serving a purpose is a must. As much as I’ve admired Wenger’s willingness to stick by players, young and old, it feels as if it’s dragging the club down.

Francis Coquelin, Gabriel, David Ospina. All players that shouldn’t be near the club, let alone first team, yet are given chance after chance to embarrass themselves.

If Wenger could free up some space and wages, this could make room for others.

In with the new

Everyone knows that Arsenal need to sign new players. However, many believe that the club will have to sign £100m+ worth of talent in order to make this side competitive.

To a degree, this might be right. However, it’s about investment in the right places. Huge amounts of money don’t have to be spent all over the pitch, just where we need it. I’m a firm believer that right now, around half of the first team players should be there and are worth their place – it’s the style, confidence and tactics that need to change.

This has been the case for a long time. How many times have we heard that Arsenal are just ‘one or two’ players away from competing and those ‘one or two’ players have never been signed?

Although we need more than just one or new men this summer, if Wenger’s willing to invest in the right areas, the boost to our team for just strengthening it could be huge. Combine this with a shake-up in tactics and training, and we could see vast improvement.

Attitude

It’s been mentioned by pundits, Gooners and opposition fans. The current attitude of the alarming majority of players in the current side is incredibly poor.

Although they’ve never exactly been cut-throat, over the past few months, they’ve looked as if they’re just counting the minutes until the season’s over.

No tracking back, no urgency, no desire. It’s embarrassing to watch.

Somewhere along the way, something’s happened to make these Arsenal players not care, whether this has been over time or suddenly. Whether they’ve each decided they’re leaving or they’re stopped playing for the manager. Whatever it is, Wenger needs to turn it around if he’s going to stay.

Now, this may be as simple as getting the players to sit around in a circle at London Colney holding hands and singing Kumbaya. It probably isn’t. Either way, it needs to be done.

Authority

Similarly, Wenger appears to have lost some of the authority he once had.

There was a time when Arsenal players, other managers and pundits revered him and while I do believe they respect him for everything he’s done, the displays the players are putting in on the pitch don’t exactly suggest they’re concerned about what he thinks.

Sir Alex Ferguson, while rather more rougher around the edges than I’d like an Arsenal manager to be, struck fear into the hearts of the Manchester United players. They were so scared of losing, they did everything they could to win.

While I don’t think for a minute that the boss should start throwing around heated hair appliances, Wenger used to carry fear but a different type of fear.

If only he could do that again.
