Joel Campbell has said that he feels ‘happy and motivated’ after receiving a callup to the Costa Rican national side despite struggling in Portugal.

Campbell’s season has declined after what seemed like a promising start with Sporting. A row last week after he wanted to take a penalty, was overruled, and then it was missed, saw him excluded from the squad this weekend completely.

“Thank God for one more call,” Joel said on his own website. “It is always a blessing and a pride to represent the country. Happy and motivated for what is coming, now to give everything to take the six points away from home

“I arrived well, motivated and happy. I hope I can contribute to the selection. We have a hard time and we rely on our individual and group capacities to win the victory in both games.

“They will be tough matches, they will be at home, with their people but we focus on ours. Let’s give everything to Mexico and Honduras.”

Campbell has played 689 Liga NOS minutes this season with three goals and four assists. That’s an average of just 45 minutes in every game he’s been involved with.

Although an abductor injury kept him out for three games last month, he has played 90 minutes just once this year in the league, and just four times all season.
