Arsene Wenger gave his verdict on Alexis Sanchez’s comments regarding his future at Arsenal during his presser ahead of the Gunners’ Premier League clash against Manchester City.

  • Alexis has 15 months left on his Arsenal deal
  • Wenger confirmed talks with Alexis over new deal will resume in summer
  • Alexis reportedly wants a payrise from £130,000 per-week to £250,000
  • Alexis has scored 18 Premier League goals this season and assisted 10

Earlier in the week, Alexis mentioned in a Huawei press conference that he’s happy in London and wants to stay there with a winning team. He also mentioned that he wants to see out the remainder of his contract at Arsenal.

“I’m happy in London, I hope I can finish my contract at Arsenal,” he said.

“I want to keep myself in a winning team and stay in the same city.”

This instantly rang alarm bells since the forward has been linked with a move to Chelsea, as well as Juventus, PSG, Bayern Munich and Inter Milan.

If Alexis stays at Arsenal simply to see out the final season of his contract, not only do the club get no money for his transfer, but they get no choice over where he moves.

Wenger, however, believes that the Chilean is happy at Arsenal, pointing out how sometimes comments given in the players’ countries can be interpreted wrongly.

“I think personally he’s happy here,” Wenger told the press.

“It’s true that we have not extended his contract yet. I hope that he will stay at the club but overall I think you have as well to be very cautious when people give interviews in their home countries.

“As you said, the interpretation is not always exactly what they wanted to say. I don’t see anything in that – he said he wants to win the championship, that’s what everybody wants. I can understand that completely.”

As it stands, nobody seems any the wiser what will happen to Alexis past this summer.
