Arsenal have reportedly contacted Roger Schmidt over replacing Arsene Wenger.

Following another embarrassing 5-1 loss at the hands of Bayern Munich complete with yet more disappointing football, everyone’s eyes are firmly on Wenger, whose contract runs out at the end of the season.

This is perhaps the first time it’s looked more likely that the Frenchman will leave rather than stay, despite reports that he’s verbally agreed a new two-year deal with the club.

Max Allegri, Eddie Howe, Diego Simeone and Thomas Tuchel have all been linked with the potential vacancy and now the latest manager said to be heading to north London next season is Roger Schmidt.

Who is he?

The former midfielder was Bundesliga side, Bayer Leverkusen’s, manager of three years until a few days ago.

The German’s team lost 4-2 at home to Atletico Madrid during the first leg of their Champions League tie and then 6-2 to Borussia Dortmund at the weekend. He was given his marching orders not long after.

Before Leverkusen, the 49-year-old managed Red Bull Salzburg for two years, leading them to their second title in three seasons.

What’s the story?

According to Sport Bild, who tend to be a bit more reliable that Bild, Arsenal are one of the clubs to get in touch with Schmidt over a job. However, apparently we’ve not done this directly but via those infamous middlemen through which all deals seem to be conducted these days.

Schmidt is apparently happy to move to England.
