Arsenal’s Alex Scott came on against France in the last part of the SheBelieves Cup opener and unfortunately injured her calf and will be out for a while as she carries the Emirates injury jinx with her.

The first Arsenal Ladies game will be the North London Derby on 19 March. From the tweet above, it is clear that she will not be ready for the game and therefore another option will have to be found. It has to be noted that there is no real natural back-up in the Arsenal first team for Alex Scott.

The first point of call should be Dominique Janssen, the extremely versatile defensive midfielder who can backup in the four positions in defence as well as defensive midfield or in the number 8 position. Unfortunately, the Dutch player is currently in rehab after getting injured in the previous international window in January.

Switching to a back three with two wing backs would also be a good choice. With Heather O’Reilly on the right wing and Emma Mitchell, Katie McCabe or Taylor Hinds on the left, it would make sense.

But the third choice centre back, Vyan Sampson, is also in rehab after undergoing surgery recently. Youngster Lotte Wubben-Moy, who has played a couple of games for the first team, is also coming back from injury.

Fara Williams as a third centre-back option might come into play as a last resort, but I don’t think it will come to that and I would expect one of the development team youngsters to step up.

So there are two players who can take over the right-back spot – Anna Patten and Chiara Ritchie-Williams. Anna recently made it into the first team while Chiara had a couple of games in the Continental cup back in 2015. Both can also fit into the right centre-back spot in a back three.

Because Spurs play in the Women’s third division, it would make sense to give one of the youngsters a game in order to test them. It will be interesting to see who gets selected by Pedro Losa in two weeks.
