Frank Lampard has officially announced his retirement from football and fellow players came out in support of the former Chelsea and England hero.

Jack Wilshere claimed that Lampard, who scored 147 goals during his 13 years at Chelsea, was the best goalscoring midfielder to ever play in the Premier League.

High praise indeed.

Meanwhile, Petr Cech, who obviously played alongside Lampard while at Chelsea, also congratulated the 38-year-old on his glowing career.

After 429 appearances for Chelsea, Lampard spent a short time at Manchester City before moving to New York City FC where he still managed to score 15 goals in 29 appearances. Still, at almost 40, the former midfielder obviously decided it was time to hang up his boots.

“Whilst I have received a number of exciting offers to continue playing, at 38 I feel now is the time to begin the next chapter in my life,” said Lampard.

“I’m grateful to the Football Association for the opportunity to study for my coaching qualifications and I look forward to pursuing the off-field opportunities that this decision opens.”
