Arsene Wenger spoke with the press after his side’s win over Hull, apologising if Alexis’ goal was handball and admitting the side were nervous.

Arsenal came into the game with enormous pressure on them after back-to-back defeats. Questions have been raised, once again, about his future, dominating the narratives.

“I felt we were resilient, focused, played a little bit nervous, you could see that, even our crowd was nervous,” Wenger said.

“On top of that we played against a good side and in the end, as long as we couldn’t score the second goal we were under threat.

“I live long enough at this club to know when you’ve lost two games, there is an edgy atmosphere but as a player you have to cope with that if you play here.”

Asked if he knew that Mark Clattenburg had apologised to Hull over Alexis’ goal and if he felt he was lucky, Wenger replied, “Maybe, I am sorry for that but I cannot influence for that. I didn’t see it as well from the stands.

He was then asked if he ever lost belief, with Geoff Shreeves trying to get him to talk about his future rather than just matches in general. Wenger was having non of it. “No, I believe first in the players and every season you have some problems or some difficulties and it’s always the way you respond. Our job if not to listen too much to what is said and focus on what we are responsible for.

“When you do not win, we feel bad, that’s why it is dangerous to lose two games in a row.”
