Jon Toral started for Rangers and was roundly criticised after they lost to an 89th minute goal at Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

Booked after just 13 minutes for pulling back his man, criticism for his performance started early in the game and didn’t stop.

He was called slow while his passing was mocked online. But ‘lazy’ seemed to be the insult of choice, amongst some others I haven’t included here because they were just abusive:

It wasn’t all bad, some fans actually thought he did quite well. Well. One:

The next time he mentioned Jon was to tweet

Then

Toral is a talented player, there is no doubt about that and much of his form could probably be put down to his lack of competitive football this season. But that in itself raises more questions than it answers. Why is he struggling for minutes?

Speaking at the start of the month, Toral said, “I am still not 100 per cent. I am getting there.

“I just really need to keep working hard on the training pitch to make sure I am fit and I am 100 per cent and I can give my best on the pitch.”

It’s easy to overreact, so it’s also worth remembering that football fans are a fickle bunch. Last weekend, when Toral wasn’t involved at all, many Rangers fans were criticising that decision too.
