Sutton United were forced to play an outfield player in goal on Saturday as Wayne Shaw’s resignation left them with no sub keeper on the bench.

After just 15 minutes, their first choice keeper, Ross Worner, picked up an injury. Manager Paul Doswell handed the gloves to defender, Simon Downer with no replacement on the bench.

Shaw resigned after the FA Cup game against Arsenal when he ate a pie on the bench. With S*nbets offering odds of 8-1 of that happening and some friends of Shaw’s allegedly benefiting, the 46-year-old offered to resign. He denies that he or any of his teammates placed a bet.

Even with an outfield player in goal Sutton managed to win the game 3-2 at Torquay. The win at Plainmoor was the first away win for the U’s since mid-August. Former Arsenal youth player, Roarie Deacon, equalised for Sutton just before halftime after they’d conceded on 15 minutes.

Sutton were behind again immediately after the break but a goal from Max Biamou equalised quickly after. Dean Beckwith scored the winner with 11 minutes remaining as he headed home a Nicky Bailey free kick.
