On this day in 2007, Arsenal lost 2-1 to Chelsea in the League Cup final and Theo Walcott scored his first goal for the club.

Arsenal had previously beaten West Brom (2-0), Everton (1-0), Liverpool (6-3) and Spurs (5-3 agg) on their way to the Millennium Stadium. They hadn’t won anything since the FA Cup in 2005 and beating rivals Chelsea would have been glorious.

However, Chelsea were the better team and despite Theo Walcott scoring his first Arsenal goal – the first of six career goals against Chelsea – the Gunners lost 2-1 thanks to a Didier Drogba brace.

The match ended up lasting 103 minutes with seven minutes added at the end because of a head injury to John Terry after Abou Diaby kicked him. Terry was defending the ball and put his head in the way of our midfielder’s boot, resulting in the England international being knocked out cold and also swallowing his tongue.

Three days later, Arsenal were knocked out of the FA Cup by Blackburn Rovers before being dumped out of the Champions League by PSV Eindhoven the following week.
