On this day in 2014, a 5-1 loss away to Liverpool in the Premier League prompted Wojciech Szczesny to post on his official Facebook page that Arsenal’s performance was “f**king embarrassing”.

2013/14 was a bit of a weird season.

It was the season after we’d sold Robin van Persie to Manchester United and although we’d since bought Mesut Ozil for a reported £42.5m from Real Madrid, we were still suffering up front. Olivier Giroud did manage to score 16 Premier League goals but compared to a fit RvP, this was nothing.

Arsenal also suffered three massive defeats, despite performing reasonably well against teams below us.

That season, we finished fourth in the League behind Chelsea, Liverpool and winners Manchester City and although we did win the FA Cup in May, our Premiership performances against the top four were horrendous.

On 8 February 2014, we ended a run of eight unbeaten games with a heavy 5-1 defeat at Anfield, in which Liverpool went 4-0 ahead in the opening 20 minutes. The capitulation prompted goalkeeper, Szczesny, to apologise on Facebook.

Later that same month, Arsenal beat Liverpool 2-1 in the fifth round of the FA Cup, so at least we had that.

We’d already lost 6-3 to Manchester City in December and would go on to be beaten 6-0 by Chelsea in March.

Fun.
