On this day in 2005, Arsenal drew 1-1 with Sheffield United on their way to the FA Cup final, which they went on to win.

The 1-1 draw on 19 February 2005 in which Robert Pires scored Arsenal’s only goal in the 78th minute before Andy Gray netted Sheffield United’s 90th-minute equaliser, meant that the clash went to a replay.

Arsenal had already faced Stoke and Wolves, so we weren’t going to let Sheffield United get in their way. Or so we thought.

The replay with Sheffield United ended 0-0, with Arsenal having to progress 4-2 on penalties. Lauren, Patrick Vieira, Freddie Ljungberg and Ashley Cole all managed to slot their penalties home. However, Sheffield United’s Alan Quinn and Jon Harley missed, sending the Gunners through to the sixth round where we beat Bolton 1-0.

The semi-final saw Arsenal beat Blackburn 3-0.

The final, which took place in Cardiff, was against Manchester United and although Arsenal didn’t play massively well, they hung in their, keeping the score at 0-0 and forcing the tie to penalties. Not a single Gunner missed their spot-kick and it was Paul Scholes who let United down.

Patrick Vieira scored the penalty we need to win. This was the last time Arsenal would win the FA Cup – or anything for that matter – until 2014.
