On this day in 2006, Arsenal managed to beat Real Madrid 1-0 away in the Champions League; the first English team to win there.

Arsenal’s form in the Premier League was pretty terrible at the time. We’d lost against Everton, followed by West Ham, then beat Birmingham, and drew 1-1 against Bolton Wanderers before losing 1-0 at home to Liverpool.

Arsenal had also been knocked out of the FA Cup by Bolton and the League Cup by Wigan at the end of January.

Therefore, when we managed to win against Real Madrid at the Bernabéu, everyone was a little surprised to say the least.

The goal from Thierry Henry in the 47th minute proved massive. We drew 0-0 in the return leg, meaning Arsenal went through 1-0 on aggregate.

Arsenal went on to beat Juventus (2-0 agg) and Villarreal (1-0 agg) to make the final against Barcelona.

The controversial Champions League final saw Jens Lehmann get a red card in the 17th minute and suffer from what Arsene Wenger argued was an offside goal from Samuel Eto’o.

Barca won 2-1. We don’t speak of it.
