On this day in 1988, Arsenal beat Everton 1-0 in the League Cup semi-final first leg on their way to the final at Wembley.

Unsung hero, Perry Groves, scored the only goal of the match at Goodison Park, which saw just 25,476 fans show up.

Arsenal went on to win 3-1 in the second leg at Highbury, with goals from David Rocastle, Alan Smith and Michael Thomas, making it 4-1 on aggregate and sending the Gunners through to the final against Luton Town.

Unfortunately, despite drawing and winning against Luton in the league, on 24 April, Arsenal lost 3-2 at Wembley. Luton initially went ahead through Brian Stein and Arsenal came back 2-1 with goals from Martin Hayes and Alan Smith. However, it wasn’t meant to be and Luton’s Danny Wilson and Brian Stein again put them 3-2 ahead in order for them to win the League Cup.

It was gutting considering Arsenal had won the League Cup for the first time the season before and a month prior had been knocked out of the FA Cup by Nottingham Forest (2-1).
