Plenty of criticism from supporters was directed in the path of Jon Toral as Rangers succumbed to a disappointing 4-1 defeat at the hands of Hearts Thursday evening.

The midfielder started as part of a trio in the middle but didn’t impress with a number of sloppy passes, which either invited pressure to his intended target or were not accurate altogether.

In a highly physical, intense fixture, there were questions about his suitability to the role he was asked to play as a central midfielder. Without the freedom to play further forward and create chances as the number 10, his influence on the game was limited and he didn’t get as much of the ball as he normally likes.

His body language in the second-half especially was cited as a concern from the Rangers fans, who felt he should’ve been sacrificed instead of goalscorer and fellow loanee, Emmerson Hyndman, after two quick-fire goals with 55 minutes on the clock.

3-1 down and cutting a forlorn figure on the pitch, it was a surprise to some that Mark Warburton persisted with the Spaniard and kept him on for 71 minutes, especially in the knowledge that he’s still a few weeks away from being fully match fit.

It was a forgettable performance from the team collectively but given the fact he’s a highly-rated youngster from Arsenal and isn’t a permanent member of the squad, there’s always a high likelihood that there will be an over-reaction on social media if he doesn’t perform well.

On this occasion, he struggled and will be hoping for better things to come in future as Rangers were far from their best and the scoreline justified the team’s display on the evening.
