Wojciech Szczesny watched on from the bench as Roma went through to the Coppa Italia semi-finals against Cesena on Wednesday evening.

The goalkeeper has become Roma’s first choice for Serie A but for the cup tournament, Luciano Spalletti has gone with current back-up, Allison.

Regardless, Woj’s side have gone through to the Coppa Italia semi-finals after a dramatic 2-1 win over Serie B side, Cesena.

Considering Cesena are 19th in the Italian second tier after being relegated from Serie A last season, it should have been a walk in the park for Roma. However, despite a 68th-minute goal from former Manchester City striker, Edin Džeko, the lower league team managed to equalise six minutes later Luca Garritano.

Fortunately for Roma, Cesena goalkeeper, Federico Agliardi, brought Kevin Strootman down in the area in the 90+7th minute of stoppage time and a penalty was awarded.

40-year-old Francesco Totti stepped up and slotted the ball neatly into the net, putting Roma 2-1 ahead at home and preventing the tie from going to extra time.
