Arsenal Ladies played their second pre-season friendly in Portugal and lost to Wolfsburg, while the Development team defeated Reading in the FA WSL Development League cup quarter-finals.

Arsenal Ladies were defeated on Saturday by Wolfsburg by one goal to nil. A goal scored by Pernilla Harder on 45+2 minutes.

The official Arsenal Ladies twitter did not tweet the line-up or any substitutions, so it was left to Girls On The Ball to inform us of what was happening.

Pedro Losa did not make many substitutions with Jemma Rose replaced by Fara Williams before half-time due to injury. Chloe Kelly replaced  Danielle Van De Donk, Carla Humphrey replaced Katie McCabe and that was it.

This is the second pre-season defeat against a German side after the 3-1 defeat to FC Bayern and while there is absolutely no need to worry, a better result is needed against Rosengard, just to build up the team’s confidence.

It is clearly a team that is evolving from last season, with three new starters in key positions, so the team is certainly adjusting and that’s why pre-season games are needed to build that understanding.

We can see that Pedro Losa did not make many changes from the FC Bayern starting 11.

Goalkeeper and back four were the same. Fara Williams was replaced by Katie McCabe with Jordan Nobbs and Kim Little playing in more defensive position than against Bayern. And Danielle Carter was up front for Jodie Taylor. Beth Mead still has not made her debut and we do not know if Rachel Laws will be signed yet.

Development team

The Development team beat Reading in the FA WSL development league Cup quarter finals by five goals to three in extra time. They were two nil down at half-time, with two goals from De Bunsen (25,32), then conceded another one from Burgess on the 65th minute.

N’Gunga cut the deficit to 3-1 in the 78th minute, Dean made it 3-2 on 84 and Filbey scored the equaliser four minutes into injury time. Then, in extra time, Dean scored with two minutes to go and N’Gunga got a fifth in the last-minute.

The other teams through to the semi-finals are Liverpool, Sunderland or Bristol.

The starting 11 was Sian Rogers, Shannon Cooke Chiara Anna Patten Kalani Pert Chiara Ritchie-Williams, Chloe Brunton-Wilde Laura Hooper Charlotte Devlin, Jess N’Gunga Rianna Dean Tinaya Alexander.

Anna Filbey replaced Chloe Brunton-Wilde on the 55th minute and Amelia Houghton-Boyle was an unused substitute.

The Development team is unbeaten in five games played so far.

Two cup wins by five goals to three and three League wins leave the team in sixth place in the table. They are 12 points behind Brighton with six games in hand.

They will play Brighton next Sunday in the League for what could be a title decider as both teams are currently unbeaten in the League.
