Alex Iwobi has admitted that the past couple of seasons in which he’s managed to break into the Arsenal first team have been a dream come true.

Iwobi made his first team debut against Sheffield Wednesday in the League Cup back in 2015 and while Arsenal embarrassingly lost 3-0 on the day, the then-teenager was one of our stand-out players.

Since then, the forward has come on leaps and bounds and now features regularly. In fact, he’s now made a total of 33 Premier League appearances, 20 of which have come during this campaign. He’s scored three times this season and assisted four, while boasting an average pass accuracy of 87% – Theo Walcott’s is just 76%.

Speaking to FourFourTwo magazine, Iwobi revealed that his rapid rise has been a dream come true but he was never nervous.

“Honestly, I wasn’t nervous at all,” he said. “There were a few other youngsters who were also making their debuts and wanted to impress, which probably took the pressure off me a little bit. The game [at Sheffield Wednesday in the League Cup] was on TV, so I was excited to get out there and show what I could do.

“I told myself to do the simple things well and I knew if I did that, then the rest of my game would come together.

“It was all a dream come true for me.”

Although Iwobi has proved slightly hit-or-miss this season when it comes to the bigger games, one of his breakthrough performances was actually against Barcelona away when he played 73 minutes at Camp Nou. Despite the 3-1 loss, Iwobi was a breath of fresh air and really forced those who perhaps hadn’t noticed him play for the reserves stand up and take notice.

I’m confident that the 20-year-old will grow and grow. He seems to have a good head on his shoulders and the skills to back it up.
