Olivier Giroud has been named Arsenal’s ‘Vitality Player of the Month’ for January, an accolade voted for by the fans.

The Frenchman, who scored 4 goals, grabbed 2 assists and outdid Henrikh Mkhitaryan with his own, onside, scorpion kick, picked up 60.4% of the vote.

Giroud averaged a goal involvement (goal or assist) once every 77 minutes throughout January. Currently he is averaging a goal involvement every 64.8 minutes across all competitions this season (10 goals, 5 assists, 973 minutes played).

Alexis Sanchez came second while Alex Iwobi came third.

Speaking about Giroud’s scorpion kick, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, told Arsenal player, “It was unbelievable.

“It’s just one of those things you might see every five seasons, if you’re lucky. Other than that, you’ll see them in various different leagues on Instagram and on highlights shows.

“It’s purely instinct. He’d already run past the ball so the only thing he could do was that, to try and get something on the ball and it’s hit off his big size 11 heel and gone in the top corner off the bar. It was an unbelievable finish and all credit to Olivier.

“He does try things like that quite often. I’ve seen him over the years do a lot of finishes like that. I remember one away at Crystal Palace, the volley where it was kind of behind him. To be fair there’s been quite a few goals, even his volley at Sunderland away this season.

“He pulls off a lot of goals where the ball’s in an awkward position and he manages to wrap his foot around it and finish it off and that one was just ridiculous, the scorpion kick. He proves that he has finishes like that in his locker and that’s the best one I’ve ever seen.”
