Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Arsenal are most likely going to offer Santi Cazorla and Per Mertesacker one-year contract extensions.

Both 32-year-old’s contracts run out at the end of the season and it’s pretty clear that they both want to stay at Arsenal. However, it’s always been down to the club. Santi and Per, as much as most of us love them, are injury prone. Especially Santi, with the Spaniard currently out for goodness knows how long after ankle surgery.

However, when Santi’s fit, he’s one of our best players. I guess it was just a matter of the club – and Wenger – weighing up whether having him at the club taking up space (admittedly, a very small space) and wages was worth the short spells in which we can actually play him.

Speaking ahead of Arsenal’s trip to Preston North End, the boss confirmed there’s an option to extend their contracts by a year, which we’ll probably do.

“We have an option [to extend for another year] on both of them,” he said, “I think we will take it.”

See.
