Theo Walcott told the press after his hattrick at St Mary’s that he will be ‘cheering on’ his former side when they play Manchester United in the EFL Cup final on 26 February.

The Saints last reached the final of this competition in 1979. Incidentally they were also knocked out of the FA Cup that year by Arsenal who went on to win the trophy.

Walcott was asked by the reporter about his hattrick aagainst his former side, with the BTSport man asking if it was ‘payback’ for our EFL Cup elimination at their hands earlier in the season.

“I wouldn’t say it’s payback at all,” Theo said, before adding some nice things about the Saints and concluding, “It’s been so long [since I left] and Southampton will always be in my heart.

“I’ll be cheering them on in the final.”
