Everton boss, Ronald Koeman has apparently made Jack Wilshere one of his main summer targets after the midfielder showed that he could stay fit for more than five minutes.

I don’t think it’s any coincidence that this story is coming out in the same week that it was announced that Arsenal’s second major shareholder, Alisher Usmanov, has paid £75m to sponsor Everton’s training ground – surely a conflict of interests that must be explored by the game’s regulatory bodies.

Koeman reportedly wants to overhaul his midfield in the summer and has earmarked Jack for a key role in the centre. Manchester City are also said to be watching his situation closely. If you remember, back in 2011 when he was still at Barca, Pep Guardiola said about Wilshere, “Wilshere is a top player. He is an excellent player, not just Arsenal, but also for the national team. [But] he is lucky because we have many players in the second team like him but he plays because there is no pressure at his club to win titles.”

Usmanov’s USM Holdings have now renamed Everton’s training ground to USM Finch Park from Finch Park and his involvement here raises serious questions for me.

How can one person have such large financial stakes in two clubs in the same division?

What is to stop Usmanov using his Arsenal contacts to strike deals for Everton?

Sure, that’s not his role, but given that Everton is owned by Farad Moshiri, who used to be a co-owner of Red & White Holdings, the company that first brought Usmanov to prominence at Arsenal, these are questions I think we’re right to ask.

Regardless of the ethical complications involved in all this, I feel fairly confident that Jack will play a starring role at Arsenal next season.

Provided our medical staff don’t ruin him when he returns from Bournemouth, obviously.
