On this day in 2010, Arsenal sent an 18-year-old Jack Wilshere out on loan to Bolton Wanderers.

The midfielder had been part of Arsenal’s academy since 2001 and made his senior debut against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park on 13 September 2008, which the Gunners won 4-0.

Two years later, Arsenal sent him out on loan to Bolton in order for him to gain more experience with competitive football. He was full of potential but just needed more time to develop before being thrown into the Gunners’ first team properly.

During his half-a-season at Bolton, Wilshere made 14 Premier League appearances, scoring once against West Ham during his loan team’s 2-1 win at Boleyn Ground and provided an assist against Portsmouth.

A season after returning from his loan spell at Bolton, the England international suffered a stress fracture to his ankle, an injury which went on to hamper him for years. Rather than his skill on the ball, Wilshere became known as one of Arsenal’s most injury-prone players.

Wilshere is currently on his second loan spell, this time with Bournemouth. He’s made 17 Premier League appearances and although he’s not yet scored, which I’m sure he’s frustrated with, he made at assist against Southampton and has impressed while staying fit for the first time in years.

Wilshere’s current Arsenal contract runs out in 2018.
