Arsenal ladies forward, Asisat Oshoala has reportedly been grumbling about the money she gets paid at the club while back home in Nigeria.

The forward, who scored 2 goals in 11 league appearances last season, was voted as African Women’s Player of the Year for 2016 at a ceremony in her home country last week, sees her wages dwarfed by those the club are paying Kim Little.

A source told us that the 26-year-old midfielder is earning a six-figure salary plus bonuses that include, among other things, a home and car. This is well in excess of the £35,000 per year that is the average in the WSL (crazy that the women mostly earn less in a year than the men do in a week).

About salaries in the division, the director of player management at the PFA, Matthew Buck, said, “They range dramatically.

“Over the last couple of years more and more players and teams have gone professional and it’s still catching up the system really.

“They range from anywhere from £5000-£10000 on the lower spectrum for players who aren’t professional up to around the £35,000 mark for the top earners.”

Again, those figures are per annum rather than the per week figures we get for the men’s game.

The WSL also has a salary cap with clubs restricted to 40% of turnover for wages. This is, again, in stark contrast to the men’s game which sees many clubs spend well in excess of this on wages alone.

Female players can top up their salary if they are an England national. So far, 30 players have received an extra £25,000 per year, with this rising to £30,000 through bonuses.

Oshoala was said to be trying to pick up some corporate sponsorship while she was in Nigeria to top up her salary.

Should she decide it’s still not worth staying at Arsenal, Tobin Heath has been touted as a possible replacement. Heath currently plays for Portland Thorns in the US. She was voted the USA’s best player of 2016.
