Shkodran Mustafi may have only arrived at Arsenal, but he’s hoping that Arsene Wenger renews his Arsenal contract and stays at the club.

The German centreback is not saying anything that the majority of the squad would not also say if you pressed them on the issue. They want Wenger to stay – he was, after all, the manager who bought them or promoted them through the ranks.

“Sometimes you don’t know how good a coach is if you’re not training him with day in, day out,” he told Goal.

“Him being the boss of Arsenal was important in the fact that I knew he’s been here a long time and there’s a structure.

“Playing for Valencia and Sampdoria every 12 months I had a new coach and that’s difficult because every time, new coach, different idea, different kind of football.

“Coming here with a coach who’s been here 20 years I knew I could come here, fit in and be part of it which makes everything much easier to play.

“I hope he’s not leaving but he has to make that decision and we will see.”

At this point, a new contract would seem more likely for Wenger. It’s well known that the board are happy to have him remain at the club for as long as he wants.

But the uncertainty over his future cannot be good for the squad who don’t know what will happen when the summer rolls around.

Ideally, Wenger should come out and confirm his plans, especially if they are to stay.

While I understand announcing that he plans to leave could have a terrible effect on the team, the club need to know so they can begin planning for the summer.
