According to a recent report in SportWitness, Arsenal are set to battle it out with London rivals Tottenham to sign highly-rated attacking midfielder Maximilian Philipp.

The 22-year-old, who previously rejected summer moves to other Bundesliga clubs, has remained faithful to SC Freiburg despite their relegation in the 2014/15 campaign.

Is he any good?

Having joined Frieburg from Energie Cottbus as a teenager at the start of 2013, he’s a versatile attacker and one that is comfortable in plenty of positions. He can play on either wing, but has been used as a secondary striker in a two-forward formation this term under Christian Streich.

Previously unfortunate with injuries (ankle and hamstring), he has proven his worth in terms of his overall contribution on a number of occasions. An electric burst of pace, impressive physical strength and precise attack positioning have proven all too difficult to deal with for opposition defenders.

Goals against Borussia Mönchengladbach and Dortmund this term have shown he’s not afraid to perform against bigger sides in Germany, but consistency is the only way he’ll be able to improve further and develop into a more complete forward.

In terms of previous dealings with Arsenal, Francis Coquelin joined the Bundesliga side on a season-long loan deal during the 2013/14 season and went on to make 24 first-team appearances for them.

Freiburg are likely to command a hefty fee for their prized asset who they’ll not want to sell at any price, whose market value is £3.4m – but they’ll want much more given Philipp’s high potential and importance to the side.

He is under contract until 2019.
