Despite a promising start to proceedings at the KCOM Stadium, Bournemouth lost 3-1 and Jack Wilshere’s creative ability was essentially stifled for large periods.

Wilshere was involved in Bournemouth’s first and only goal of the game, when he took the ball in his stride near the edge of the area past two defenders before a deft backheel saw the ball roll into the path of Ryan Fraser. The tricky winger weaved his way into the box before being hauled down by fullback Harry Maguire and Junior Stanislas broken the deadlock from the resulting spot-kick with just three minutes played.

Wilshere himself looked to get in more advanced positions in the hope that for all their pressure, Bournemouth could double the lead and assert dominance over their hosts. Benik Afobe and Charlie Daniels both had goal-scoring efforts but neither were able to find the back of the net. Abel Hernandez was though and took full advantage of sloppy marking in the area to head home from close-range before the interval.

Wilshere was visibly frustrated at a lack of urgency from his team-mates to pass forward and ultimately give him much service in-and-around the final third, as the chief conductor of their attacking play, the Englishman had to endure a bumpy ride for the most part.

HULL, ENGLAND – JANUARY 14: Jack Wilshere (L) completed three dribbles and was also fouled twice during a frustrating afternoon at the KCOM, where he wasn’t given adequate service to create many chances and his teammates’ lack of a clinical edge ultimately cost them against a side they should’ve beaten. (Photo by Gareth Copley/Getty Images)

It was Harry Arter’s slack pass in midfield which was cruelly punished by the hosts with Hernandez’s fantastic finish adding to his and Hull’s tally of two goals for the afternoon – but they were not yet finished. A wicked volley from Tom Huddlestone swerved and ricocheted off the shoulder of Tyrone Mings past a helpless Artur Boruc to extend Hull’s lead with just under half an hour left to play.

To his credit, Wilshere kept going and almost pulled a goal back for the visitors, instead he was denied by a good stop from Eldin Jakupovic as Bournemouth’s winless start to 2017 continues.
