There were minutes this weekend for Arsenal’s more experienced players out on-loan but a few youngsters also featured across Europe as the top leagues returned to action after a winter break.

Here’s a full round-up:

ENGLAND

Calum Chambers started and played the full 90 minutes during Middlesbrough’s goalless draw away against Watford. The centre-back made an impressive 10 clearances throughout as the hosts were threatening on a number of occasions in search of the all-important breakthrough.

WATFORD, ENGLAND – JANUARY 14: Middlesbrough’s Marten de Roon (L) and Calum Chambers (R) battle for possession with Stefano Okaka of Watford (C) during the Premier League match at Vicarage Road on January 14, 2017 in Watford, England.

Jack Wilshere was on the losing side as AFC Bournemouth went down 3-1 at the hands of Hull on Saturday afternoon. The creative midfielder was restricted for large periods and despite a few promising flashes, couldn’t do much as he didn’t receive the ball to feet enough. Scotland

Jon Toral made his debut for Rangers in a friendly against RP Leipzig at Ibrox. Toral started and completed the first 45 in Rangers’ 4-0 reverse.

PORTUGAL

Joel Campbell started and played 45 minutes during Sporting’s 2-2 away draw against Chaves. He was replaced by André as the second-half began, and had a quiet game by his standards – despite being fouled on three separate occasions, he only had 27 touches of the ball and wasn’t able to have much of an impact on the match itself.

ITALY

Wojciech Szczesny kept his eighth Serie A clean sheet of the campaign during Roma’s narrow 1-0 win over Udinese on Sunday afternoon, equalling a personal record for the 26-year-old.

He kept eight clean sheets throughout the whole of last season in 34 matches, and is only second in the charts to Empoli’s Lukasz Skorupski (9) currently. With five saves as well as a few catches from aerial deliveries into the box, Szczesny was one of Roma’s best performers when they really needed him.

Netherlands

Daniel Crowley was a second-half substitute but didn’t have enough time to influence the game as Go Ahead Eagles lost 3-1 against AZ Alkmaar in the Eredivisie. He made a key pass and had 16 touches of the ball but on the whole, his team-mates struggled in the final third.

Kelechi Nwakali started and completed the full 90 minutes in the advanced midfield role during MVV Maastricht’s 2-0 win over Helmond Sport. Stefan O’Connor was once more an unused substitute.

SPAIN

Julio Pleguezuelo was an unused substitute during Mallorca’s 1-1 draw with Getafe – the talented Spaniard is yet to feature in 2017 and has still only played 213 minutes of Segunda Division football this term, which is disappointing to say the least.
