On this day in 1970, Arsenal paid £100,000 to sign Peter Marinello – the first time they had ever paid a six-figure sum for a player.

Marinello arrived at the club from Hibs in Scotland and promptly scored on his debut against Manchester United at Old Trafford, however it would be one of only a handful of goals that the forward would score during his three years at the club.

51 appearances returned just five goals and in 1973 he left to join Portsmouth after being unable to agree a new deal with Arsenal.

Despite impressing when he first arrived, a reported combination of homesickness, heavy drinking, living a ‘celebrity’ lifestyle, and a knee injury saw his performances drop, costing him his place in the side. He played just three games during the famous ‘70/71 Double Winning season and only eight league games in ‘71/’72.

Born in Edinburgh, he now lives in Bournemouth.
