With Emma Byrne released by the club at the end of her contract, why not take a gamble on the superstar goalkeeper, Hope Solo?

Noises coming from the USA suggest the US WNT goalkeeper is looking for a club for the upcoming season and there are not many clubs in England who can afford her. Basically the top three teams are rich enough to pay her well and that’s it.

Manchester City would be favourites to sign her as she visited their ground a couple years ago and contacts are already established, especially as their current goalkeeper is nowhere near Solo’s level.

Karen Bardsley is an error prone goalie, but this has been hidden by the exceptional quality in City’s defence and defensive organisation. No one in the FA WSL has seriously tested in her in 2016.

At Arsenal, there is an obvious opening for an experienced goalkeeper with Emma Byrne leaving and Hope Solo would be interesting competition for Sari Van Veenendaal, unless the coaching staff decides to promote Sian Rogers to number two.

Considering we paid a transfer fee to prise her from Birmingham, it would make sense to have her as a back-up unless they think she is not ready yet.

There would also marketing benefits in signing a world renowned player like Solo who is a brand on her own with her on and off the field controversies.

It will be interesting to see if she lands in Europe or carrys on playing in the NWSL with the Seattle Reign or any other team come 2017, but she would certainly be a welcome addition to the squad.
