18-year-old Reece Oxford was high on Arsene Wenger’s wishlist, according to West Ham.

The defender, who most of us will remember from that 2-0 loss at the Emirates last season in which he managed to keep Mesut Ozil quiet, has just signed a new £20,000-a-week deal with the Hammers, which will take him up to 2021.

However, since his impressive debut, he’s found it hard to get game time, only appearing three times in all competitions this season and not once in the league.

Saying this, he’s only 18 and while he had a good game against Arsenal, it’s natural that once the adrenaline wore off he would return to earth. It’s just unfortunate for him that the game of his life was against Arsenal in a season opener.

Unusually, West Ham even confirmed that both Arsenal and Manchester City were very interested in the England u20 international. However, while I believe we may have been interested, having a look and making an offer are two very different steps.

Perhaps he’s one to watch for the future.
