Ajax’s sporting director, former Gunner, Marc Overmars, has ruled his Dutch team out of the race to sign AIK Solna forward, Alexander Isak.

The 17-year-old is heavily linked with a move to Serie A club, Juventus, as well as Arsenal, but as time passes and the youngster’s name gets around, other European sides are being linked.

Overmars, however, has been quick to rule Ajax out of the running, claiming that Isak is simply too expensive.

“Previously, we could buy Christian Eriksen for €1.5m, Viktor Fischer €1.2m. But that time has past. In Sweden plays a 17 year-old forward. He should not be €8m,” he said, according fotbollskanalen.se.

€8m is a lot for a teenager. Especially a relatively unproven one.

Although he has been capped for Sweden’s u21s and other youth sides, he’s only made four appearances and he’s only played a full 90 minutes twice this season.

In 1997, Overmars himself signed for Arsenal for not a lot more than £5m and he was considerably older than young Isak is. He was also a lot more experienced by the time he came to north London.

Therefore, I can understand why he’s outraged.
