On this day in 1922, John ‘Jock’ Robson, Arsenal’s smallest ever league goalkeeper at 5’8”, made his debut for the club against Bolton in a 5-nil win.

Signing for Arsenal for the sum of £5 in 1921 from Vale of Leithen, Robson was born in 1899 and served his country in the First World War with the 6th Seaforth Highlanders in France before returning to a life in football.

Robson’s debut made him the third keeper the club had used that season and he went on to make 20 appearances before the end of the campaign.

He made a total of 101 appearances for the club before leaving to join Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic in August, 1926.

He died in 1995, aged 96.
