On this day in 1932, Arsenal defeated Sheffield United 9-2 at Highbury on their way to winning their second title in three years and first of a hattrick of back-to-back titles

Arsenal were top of the table going into the game and were 3-1 up by halftime despite going a goal down after just 18 minutes. By the end of the game, Jack Lambert had grabbed 5, including what was his 12th hattrick for the club (more than any other player).

Cliff Bastin also helped himself to a hattrick while David Jack scored the other.

The team that started the game was:

Frank Moss; George Male, Eddie Hapgood, Herbie Roberts; Frank Hill, Bob John; Cliff Bastin, Joe Hulme, Jack Lambert, David Jack, Alex James.

It was watched by a crowd of 41,520.

United got some measure of revenge when they beat Arsenal 3-1 at Bramall Lane on the final day of the season, but it was too little too late to stop Arsenal from claiming the title by four clear points (at a time when a win only got you two points) from Aston Villa.

Lambert, Arsenal’s goalscoring hero, tragically passed away in 1940 when he was just 38. He was killed in a car accident in Enfield.

In all, he scored 109 goals in 161 appearances for Arsenal including 38 in 34 starts during the 1930/31 season.
