Kieran Gibbs has spoken about how much he enjoyed captaining Arsenal during the EFL Cup this season.

Although Arsenal lost 2-0 against the Saints, the left-back still admits that it was a massive honour and explained how different being a leader is to just playing as normal.

“It’s a lot different on the day when you’re captain compared too when you’re not,” he said.

“When you’re captain you have to be first everywhere, have to make sure everyone’s ready and the first time you do that it feels so different. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I have to say I loved it.”

Gibbs has been at the club for 12 years now and although his existing contract has just 18 months left on it, Arsene Wenger has already said that he hopes the defender signs on for longer, saying, “We cannot make a case of every single contract negotiation. Personally I think that Gibbs should stay here.”

Although the 27-year-old has a long way to go, Nacho Monreal is currently showing signs that he could be winding down. He’s not been half as sharp this season as he was last and, if Gibbs works hard, this could be his chance to secure that starting left-back spot for himself.

The fact that he loved captaining Arsenal so much is a positive sign and, who knows, maybe one day he could become a proper leader. At the moment, all he can do is graft.
