As it is traditional to have an end of the year review, here are my Arsenal Ladies player awards for the 2016 season.

Here are my top three players for the 2016 season:

#3 Dominique Janssen

Midfielder: 21 games, 14+7 starts, 4 goals

The Dutch defender/midfielder never let the team down when selected in the starting XI or coming on as a sub. It was a surprise considering how well she played that she did not get more starts. A reliable team player who can play in so many positions on the pitch.

#2 Casey Stoney

Centre back: 19 games 16+3 starts, 1 goal

The veteran centreback was exceptionally consistent this season when paired with Jemma Rose or with Josephine Henning. She anchored the Ladies’ defense throughout the year and her experience combined with her knowledge of the game was precious in a very difficult season. It was certainly disappointing to see her leave the club and sign for Liverpool.

#1 Vicky Losada

Playmaker: 18 games 3 goals

The Spanish midfielder was consistent throughout the season and brought everything you needed from your playmaker. Technical ability, vision, calmness in difficult period on the pitch. Her capacity to retain the ball and find space to give the ball to our quick players was crucial.

After a first year where she struggled a little bit to adapt to the FA WSL, she was sensational this season and showed great maturity on the ball and also did a lot of good defensive work.

Vicky was also named player of the season by the official Arsenal Ladies supporters’ club and now gone back home to Barcelona.

Best signing in 2016

Katie McCabe

The young Irish winger has been learning her trade and has put some good performances when called upon. She has a good left foot, can cross and as well as a powerful shot. There are not many left footed winger in the FA WSL and she will surely develop into a top player in the next years to come.

Worse signings in 2016

Asisat Oshoala and Fara Williams.

Both players did not really bring the expected level of performances last season, although Williams might have some mitigating personal circumstances, Oshoala is young and will surely improve next season.

Young players of 2016

Anna Filbey, Anna Patten, Lotte Wubben-Moy, Laura Hooper, Taylor Hinds

All five players took part in the FIFA u17 Women’s World Cup in Jordan and a couple of them are likely to compete for a first team place as early as next season when the new FA WSL winter season schedule kicks-off.
