Arsene Wenger leveled a good-humoured dig at the media on Tuesday morning ahead of Arsenal’s midweek Champions League clash against PSG.

Following the news on Monday that Hector Bellerin has signed a new contract with the club rumoured to be six-and-a-half years long, the boss chuckled that now the media will have to come up with someone else who wants to leave.

“It’s a long-term contract,” he grinned when asked about how long the rightback had signed on for.

“It just sends out that the media will have to find a different name for somebody who wants to leave the club!”

This kind of clever dig is classic Wenger. No malice or poison, just a clever comment to let them know that he’s fully aware of what they’ve been saying but it doesn’t bother him too much. In fact, he can even joke about it.

The boss went on to speak about the 21-year-old’s commitment to the club and how it’s important for the younger players who have been given their first chance to pay back to Arsenal in that respect.

“Overall it shows that the players we have educated here are committed, and that’s what you want,” the boss continued.

“When you give chances and educate young boys, when you give them a chance to play in the first team, you want them to commit to the club. That’s an important quality that we have at this club, so we are very happy when they commit.”

Bellerin said something similar when he signed the extension, saying that it only felt right to stay at the club that gave him his big break and that Arsenal feels like home.

“I’m really, really happy and this club is my home right now,” he said.

“I’ve been here for more than five years now so I was really, really excited when the club told me that they wanted to extend my contract.

“I wasn’t thinking about anything else other than staying here and continuing my development here. This is where I’m happy. I’m just very grateful and pleased to have signed.”

Bellerin is currently carrying an ankle injury so won’t feature against PSG midweek.
