Arsene Wenger claims that Emi Martinez could become Arsenal’s no.1.

The goalkeeper signed a new contract with the club on Thursday and the boss was full of praise the 24-year-old ahead of Arsenal’s weekend clash with Bournemouth.

“He’s our No 3 at the moment but he has the potential to become No 1,” Wenger said.

“That’s why we extended his contract. He learns a lot at the moment with Petr Cech and David Ospina. For me he’s certainly the future goalkeeper at Arsenal. The problem in his job is you have to be patient. When you see that Petr Cech is 34 and still plays… when you’re a young goalkeeper you need to be patient.”

Could Emi become no.1? Of course, it’s entirely possible. However, with Petr Cech currently first choice by a long way, David Ospina second and goodness knows where Wojciech Szczesny fits into all this, you do have to wonder.

Woj is set to return to north London after two seasons on loan with Roma and I find it hard to imagine Wenger letting go of him. The boss is a fan of the Poland international and I doubt he would only loan him out if he didn’t have high hopes.

Ospina, I believe could leave. Allowing Woj to come in as second choice and Emi therefore staying third. The Colombian has had some solid games, I’ll give him that, but he’s still not good enough for Arsenal.
